Chapter 6
Darcy
It had been a week since Elizabethâs surprise visit and even more surprising invitation to Longbourn. Darcyâs days had been filled with attempts to finish his business in London as quickly as possible, so great was his eagerness to see Elizabeth again. However, it seemed as if every gentleman, businessman, attorney, and tradesman in the city were plotting against his early departure.
But at that moment, Darcy was writing his last bit of correspondence necessary to conclude his time in the city. In just a few short moments, he would be free. Free from the city, free from his business, free to make his way to Hertfordshire. All week, his thoughts had been preoccupied by Elizabeth. All week, he had done his best to push them aside, to focus on what he needed to finish. He had failed far more often than succeeded.
Signing his name with a flourish, Darcy threw down his pen and sighed with relief. He was finished. Leaning back in his chair, he rubbed his eyes. For the first time in a week, he allowed his mind to wander freely without guiltâtowards Elizabeth, naturally, but also towards the country. He hated the city. He longed for fresh air, and long walks and rides around Pemberleyâor Netherfield. Charles Bingley had acquired a truly beautiful estate.
Charles. He closed his eyes at the reminder of his friend. Now there was a piece of business he had not yet finished.
Darcy leaned forward again and drew a fresh piece of paper towards him. He had been thinking about Charles a lot over the past week. The more he focused on Elizabeth, the more he realized how much he had wronged his friend. He had, at the time, only been concerned for Charlesâ happiness, but it was becoming more and more obvious that he had robbed his friend of that very thing.
Jane loved him. Elizabeth had thoroughly convinced him of Janeâs affection for the man, and he had seen the way Bingley had approached young ladies of lateâit was clear to all that his heart still belonged to the eldest Miss Bennet.
No, Darcy thought to himself, before he went to Hertfordshire for his own happiness, he had to redeem Charlesâ first. He quickly sketched out a letter declaring that he would call upon the Bingley residence the next day. Ringing the bell, he handed it to the servant to be mailed and thought about how he would approach the subject with Bingley.
His friend would be angry, of that he could be certain. But even in anger, Charles possessed good senseâwell, most of the time.
Bingley was the sort that often let his heart make his decisions. Darcy had always been a bit surprised that the man had remained single so longâhe loved love. But he was also very discerning when it came to lifeâonly the perfect partner would do. And while he had flitted away weeks and months in the company of this young lady and that, he had never truly been in love. Not that Darcy could see.
